I had the blessed privilege of
attending the Oakland Coliseum
Stadium (Oakland, CA) in Jun
30, 1990 to see President Mandela and Winnie Mandela.
The air was filled with excitement as bands
played, dancers danced, singers sung and signers signed in beat to the drums
and in unison with every voice.
All
waited anxiously for the main attraction--Mr. Mandela.
The stadium sits over 60,000 people. Voices shouting with excitement roared loudly permeating the air like billows
of smoke filling the surrounding
area.
Then, there was that moment when
Mr. Mandela walked to the podium. Mr. Mandela raised his fist in that well known gesture of a clinched fist proclaiming "Black Pride" and "Black Power" as the shouts and screams got louder; feet stomping on the bleachers as over 60,000 people saluted their symbol of peace and freedom
like resounding claps of thunder that lasted for approximately 5 minutes.
Suddenly, as Mr. Mandela began to speak. The
entire Stadium became quiet as every ear was captivated by Mr. Mandela hanging
onto his every word.
As I look around in
quietness of spirit and soul at a rainbow of peoples, there was not a dry eye
in the place including mine! There was such a hushed silence as if on cue from a higher power, one could hear a pin drop.
What an exciting day that was and I am
certain will forever live on in the memory of all who were there at the Oakland Coliseum
Stadium in Oakland, California that day—it will mine!
Take your rest Royal Son of G-D. You have fought a good fight, you kept the
faith your reward is waiting for you, your legacy as well as your spirit will
live on!
